The Great American Race, The Super Bowl of NASCAR, The First Big Race, no matter what you call it, the Daytona 500 is what truly kicks off the NASCAR season. This years Daytona 500 was held yesterday. The race was filled with red flags and even road construction. During the race around lap 123 a 15 inch pothole formed in the track between turns 1 and 2. The race was red flagged while track officials attempted to fix it, resulting in a two hour delay. The repair did not last long less than 30 laps later to hole reopened resulting in another 40 minute delay.
Putting the road construction aside, it was a surprising race. Is Dale Earnhardt Jr. back? He had a great run coming up through the pack for a drag race to the finish against Jamie McMurry. Earnhardt crossed the checkered in 2nd place. A great start for him, hopefully he has a good season underway. Jamie McMurry, driver of the Bass Pro Shop #1 car took the checkered flag after starting in 13th place. It was a very good day for him.
Next NASCAR race is next Sunday from Fontana for the AutoClub 500.
